We have a lot of weather happening over the next 7-10 days and beyond. The bulk of the active weather will first occur across the western third of the U.S. this week but with an extended Pacific jet and active sub-tropical jet, we're about to have an active storm pattern establish itself across the southern U.S. from coast to coast this weekend into the following week.
For now, let's just hit the high points on what to expect this week and the upcoming weekend, and then we'll flesh out specifics in the coming days. Sound like a plan?
Weather Highlights
Strong ridge to build over Great Basin into Idaho/Montana early week, pushing temperatures to near record levels
Shortwave to skirt western Washington State early week, bringing rain chances to western Washington/Oregon
Great Basin ridge breaks down/moves eastward, as long-wave trough enters West Coast (w/ cooling trend); widespread moderate to heavy precipitation for much of California and up West coast mid to late week (atmospheric river setup), spreading eastward to much of West
Moderate to heavy snow for Sierra Nevada, Nevada high elevations, southern/central Utah mountains, southeast Idaho late week, with falling snow levels with time; remainder of Rockies to have snow over the weekend
Great Plains/Midwest mostly dry with well above average temperatures most of the week, as western U.S. ridge moves eastward and amplifies
Mid-level low to drop into upper Midwest/Great Lakes on Tuesday and the Southeast on Wednesday, bringing some snow accumulations for parts of Michigan and the Appalachians from central Pennsylvania to North Carolina
Mid-level feature to bring light to moderate rain across Ohio Valley (some snow mix possible), Mid-Atlantic, Carolinas, and eastern Kentucky/Tennessee Tuesday into early Wednesday
Florida to experience below-average temperatures most of week but not freezing temperatures; mostly dry week with potentially wet late weekend
Long-wave trough and associated upper-level to bring noteworthy intrusion of Arctic air into New England and Mid-Atlantic over the weekend
Potent shortwave to enter Southwest late week, bringing swath of moderate to heavy precipitation from lower California, Southwest, Southern Plains, Southeast, and potentially Mid-Atlantic; heavy mountain snow possible in Arizona/New Mexico, winter storm potential for parts of Southeast late weekend (discussed here), and severe weather risk in Florida
